The Backslide is out today!

I’ve been wrapped up in the story of this song for the past two years. It’s funny how self imposed deadlines have a way of sneaking up on you. Although I don’t think I had another option but to release this music on the anniversary of the beginning of the end of the relationship that inspired this release.

And it truly is a release. To eject a meticulously crafted and brutally honest part of yourself into the universe via sound waves and let it find its way in the world: it’s a terrifying and exhilarating time and I feel fully unprepared. I don’t have kids but I imagine it’s a microcosm of the experience of giving birth.

To be honest, I’ve struggled for a long time with how to talk about a breakup without creating a caricature of a person whom I will always care so deeply about.

So I decided to create caricatures of myself.

The music video introduces 4 versions of me, simultaneously living out different stages of the breakup. “The Backslide” premiers this evening on Youtube at the same time as our Tone Shift listening party in Brooklyn.
