Back Where We Started

The story starts here

Back Where We Started is Out Today!

Back Where We Started is the first track on the album, and of all the songs it really captures the twisting roads of the journey to making this record.

The first version of this song was recorded on May 2nd, 2023. Just me and the rhodes in Austin, Texas questioning the fate of a relationship I didn’t know was doomed to end. When I started working on this record I pulled this song from the vault and the lyrics hit different.

“I’m on the edge and I’m terrified that I can’t make you stay.”

This song took on so many different forms before reaching its final form in Nashville, Tennessee in November of 2024. There’s the original piano ballad, there’s the moody conga version from Los Angeles (that didn’t quite pan out) – but nothing quite captures the angst like a good old rock n’ roll song.

Tracking in Nashville with Kai Welch

True to the ethos of the album I decided to lay down the bones of the song in one take with my friend Kai on guitar and me on drums. This is when the song really came to life. It was our very last day of recording and we finally cracked the code for the very first song on the album.
